Music and Dance
Music and dance were essential to the 1920's. Types of music included Jazz, Orchestra, Ragtime, Broadway Musicals, and an up beat tempo. Jazz music was not as popular in the early 1920's because it was accused of being the devils music. But soon it became the most popular and with the invention of the radio and phonograph records, you could hear music almost anywhere. It came from clubs, tea rooms, hallways, and virtually anywhere someone could place a radio. Struggling vocalists, dying just to be heard and to tell their stories were now taking center stage. With music, came the up beat dance moves of the time and many came from the blacks who had seen white people dance and added a swing of their own to it. Many dances moves, included the shimmy, turkey trot, buzzard lope, chicken scratch, monkey glide, and the bunny hug were created by the blacks and became popular in dance.
The Popular dance music of the time consisted mostly of blues-ragtime, which was not jazz but was very much like it. The people craved a fast tune and a jump to every song and they were given just that.
